Shaler Area Middle School students to stage “Romeo to Go” Nov. 20-21

Shaler Area Middle School students will stage a unique version of a classic production in this fall’s play “Romeo to Go,” a short comedy by Jonathan Rand.

The two-act play follows a group of students enrolled in a Drama One class, but due to budget cuts, the class will only be a single 20-minute session. Under the direction of Mrs. Gunnysack, the students will put together a 10-minute version of “Romeo and Juliet” to be performed during a school assembly.

“The students only have 10 minutes to put on the play, and my character changes it and creates more of a comedy,” said eighth-grader Michaela Brining, who plays Mrs. Gunnysack. “I really like this play because it is so different and funny.”

Ellen Spondike, middle school music teacher and play director, said students have incorporated singing and dancing into this year’s play and have choreographed all of the dance numbers themselves.

“It’s a really strong group of kids this year,” Spondike said.

Performances will be 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20 and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Shaler Area Middle School auditorium, 1810 Mt. Royal Blvd. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens and can be purchased at the door.
