Shaler Area senior a Commended Student in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program

Shaler Area School District is proud to recognize senior Zachary Hughes as being named a Commended Student in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Shaler Area High School principal Dr. Timothy Royall presented Zachary Hughes with a letter of commendation and certificate for his achievement.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 competition by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Zachary Hughes, of Shaler Township, is an honor student at the high school and enrolled in five Advanced Placement courses in his senior year: Japanese, Calculus BC, Physics, Literature and Economics. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, and the Japanese Honor Society. He also plays the trumpet in the Titan Marching Band.
