Students collect cleaning items for the hurricane relief efforts

With the support of staff and the community, Shaler Area Elementary School students in grades four, five, and six came together to collect cleaning supplies to help with the hurricane relief efforts in Texas.

When sixth-grade students in the SAES Student Ambassadors group, a leadership club, heard about Operation Clean Up Bucket from Kristen Kotsko, the mother of a sixth-grade student, they decided to participate in the supply drive and partner with the Robinson Presbyterian Church to deliver the supplies to areas in need.

The Student Ambassadors invited the entire student body to collect cleaning supplies and help them spread the word in the community. Students volunteered to hand out flyers during the September curriculum nights in their building, and within two days they had a pallet of five-gallon buckets donated by Erich Salac, stepfather of a fourth-grader. Entire classrooms “sponsored a bucket” to collect all of the needed cleaning supplies to fill it, including brushes, sponges, gloves, dust masks, cleaning solutions, and trash bags. Individuals and families also donated individual cleaning items. Students gave up lunches and free periods to fill buckets with one of each cleaning item in preparation for shipment. Within one week, the school collected more than 79 five-gallon buckets worth of supplies to send to the hurricane relief efforts in Texas.
