Shaler Area Elementary students to benefit 2 PPG grants
Shaler Area Elementary School is the recipient of two PPG Innovative Classroom grants to benefit students by introducing additional resources into the classroom.

One $1,000 PPG Innovative Classroom Grant will fund the purchase of three Lego robotics sets to expand opportunities for students in the classroom and the school’s Robotics Club to explore coding and programming. The Robotics Club currently is expanding and the robotics kits, in addition to the current robotics offerings, will allow more students to be exposed to and participate in robotics, coding and programming aspects of the science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) curriculum.

A second $1,000 grant will fund the purchase of a wireless weather station and several wireless cameras to monitor the outside environment. The current and cached weather data collected by the wireless weather station will be available to students and staff via the web. Two wireless cameras will be purchased and placed outside the elementary school for students to observe the weather in a courtyard and the bird observation station. The bird observation station will include food and water that is most attractive to the widest range of local and migratory species. These observations and data will be used in holistic science and math units to teach various math/population distribution and migration concepts. The grant also will fund the purchase of a Wireless Fish Finder fishing camera that will send live video of the school’s pond and fish in their natural habitat to apps that will be available to every classroom in our school.
