Shaler Area High School presents Radium Girls Nov. 21-23
Shaler Area High School students will tell the true story of a group of young women who made a huge impact on history in “Radium Girls,” which opens in November.

The play is based on the true story of the “radium girls,” the female factory workers from Orange, New Jersey, who took on the U.S. Radium Corporation after contracting radium poisoning. The female factory workers were helping with the war effort by painting glow-in-the-dark dials with self-luminous paint.

The impact the women made in the scientific community and in the lives of workers everywhere is far reaching and is still important to this day.

Grace Fryer, played by senior Kelsey Marshall, leads the efforts for justice along with fellow factory worker Kathryn Schaub, played by senior Isabella James. Together they go up against the U.S. Radium Corporation and its president Arthur Roeder (senior Alex Almonte), who is supported by his wife Diane Roeder (junior Zoe Babbit), and company vice president C.B. Lee (senior Roman Kurz).

This is the first time in recent years that Shaler Area students have produced a play inspired by a true story. The production is directed by teachers Kristen Aluise and Anne Loudon and will feature 36 actors and 30 additional students will provide support as the stage crew.

The performances will be 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 21 and 22, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Shaler Area High School auditorium, 381 Wible Run Road.

Tickets are $9 and can be purchased online at www.showclix.com/event/sahs-radiumgirls or in person at the high school activities office Monday through Friday from 6:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. or at the high school auditorium ticket booth, which opens 1 hour before each performance.
