In the News

Watch this video (1:06) to see how a school bank is helping children learn how to save:

The next banking day this year will occur on Wednesday, November 15th during homeroom in the GATE classroom. Students who participated in the program last year or who have recently signed up for a PNC Bank account can participate. Students will be able to bring in their money (any amount up to $20 in cash or a check written out to the student) during homeroom on the designated School Banking hours (every other Wednesday during homeroom throughout the year).
If you want your child to participate in the program anytime throughout the year, please feel free to go to any PNC Bank branches (Shaler, or Millvale) with your child to sign up for this program. For any questions you may have, please contact:

JA Day on May 11, 2018

Shaler Area Elementary School will participate in Junior Achievement again this year. Junior Achievement (JA) is a youth development organization with the core purpose to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.
We are asking for parent volunteers and people from the community to participate in volunteering their time for this event on May 11, 2018. If you would like to learn more about Junior Achievement or have questions about the specifics of this event, please contact Heather Oros at orosh@sasd.k12.pa.us  .

Book Orders for GATE Students
Scholastic Book Orders are due by 12/1/17.

Students can now order books at their reading level, either on line or by picking up a booklet within the GATE room.  If you are ordering online, please go to scholastic.com/bookclubs

Class Activation Code: H8VRW

Follow these steps in order to gain access to great reading.  Best of all, we earn a FREE book for the classroom library every time a
parent places an order online. I will include these books as incentives within
the GATE classroom.

It’s so simple! Here’s how it works:
at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. On
the parent page, register by clicking click the “Don’t have a user name or
password?” link. When prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code
shown above. This unique code ensures that your order is sent to me. SELECT
the books you’d like to order—choose from thousands of titles—many more
than in our monthly flyers. SEND
your order to me online by the due date and your child’s books will be
delivered directly to my classroom. Ordering
online is fast, easy, and secure.

Of course, you can still order using the form from the printed flyer. But why not
see for yourself how convenient it is to order online?

Thank you,
Mrs. Oros
Lexile Information

Students take the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) assessment a couple times throughout the year.  Students learn about their Lexile.  To find books at an independent reading level, a student should read books 100-150 below their Lexile score.  Additionally, if the student has a higher Lexile, the library may not have a lot of selection at that level.  As long as the GATE student is reading at the appropriate grade level Lexile and above that is fine.  We are currently trying to compile a list of books with a high text complexity and appropriate age appropriate content for students who have above 1100 Lexile.  Any questions, come ask us.  Trouble finding books, check out www.lexile.com to find books in the appropriate Lexile range.

IKS Titan Simulator
Throughout the year there might be different visitors from outside the district wanting to learn more about the IKS Titan Simulator. Students who are having GATE class at a time of a visit will assist with discussing the different positions within the simulator and model how everyone on the simulator needs to work together in order to be successful in problem solving.
