“Meet the Principals”
Welcome to the Shaler Area Middle School! It is an honor and a pleasure to serve our students, parents, staff, and community as middle school principal.
Mr. Martynuska is a native of Lilly, Pennsylvania and is a 1986 graduate of Penn Cambria High School in Cresson, PA. In 1990, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA before earning a Master of Science degree in 1995 in the area of Educational Leadership at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA. In 1997, Mr. Martynuska also earned a Superintendent Letter of Eligibility from Widener University in Chester, PA and completed further coursework toward a doctoral degree at the University of Pittsburgh. Since 1990, Mr. Martynuska has also served in the following capacities as an educator:

Mr. Martynuska is a resident of the Shaler Area School District (Glenshaw) and is married to Nancy Loskoch, a kindergarten teacher in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. They have four children: Tyler (age 20, a graduate of Wyotech Institute in Diesel Technology and currently a Diesel Mechanic in Altoona, PA), Alex (age 18, a senior at Altoona Area High School), Lilliana (age 12, a 7th grader), and Harrison (age 9, a 4th grader). He also has two pets: a chihuahua mix (Rosalita) and a Manx cat (Coral). His interests and hobbies include: spending time with family, walking/jogging, collecting vintage baseball cards and visiting different baseball stadiums with his sons, supporting the University of Pittsburgh athletics, following all sports (especially track and field), reading for pleasure, and current events.

Mrs. Howard grew up in the city of Pittsburgh. In 1996, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of Pittsburgh. After some time working in the private sector, Mrs. Howard returned to school to earn her Masters of Arts in Teaching from Chatham University. Mrs. Howard went on to get her Principal Certification from Point Park University and her Superintendent Letter of Eligibility from Gannon University. She is currently working on her Doctorate at Point Park University.

During her time in education, Mrs. Howard has co-authored Case Studies in Data Driven Decision Making(2007), and won Walmart’s 2006 Teacher of the Year (in conjunction with Phi Delta Kappa International). She also won the 2008 Graduate Alumni Award for Teaching from Chatham University.
Mrs. Shannon Howard is married to Dan Howard. Together, they have two children: Madison (age 13, an eighth grader) and Caitlin (age 12, a seventh grader). Their girls are actively involved in Tae Kwon Do, crew, lacrosse and theatre. In her free time, Mrs. Howard is also studying Tae Kwon Do, which she enjoys doing with her family. In addition, she enjoys reading, exercise, spending time with family, and sitting by a campfire.
