Hello! I would like to introduce myself. My name is Julie McDermott and I am delighted to work with your child this year. I teach mathematics on Team 6B.
As a Shaler Area graduate, I am proud to teach in the Shaler Area School District. I have enjoyed the Shaler Community and participated in many activities. To name a few, I have mentored and tutored children at the Middle School for several years, volunteered at the library, and am the Co-Director of the Shaler Adaptive Aquatics for Health (S.A.A.H.) at Kiwanis Pool and S.A.E.S. Something I particularly enjoy is playing soccer and the most rewarding experience were my seven years as a coach for TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) for children with special needs, in the Shaler Soccer Club. I enjoy playing most sports, board games, the piano, and reading. Most of all, I have always enjoyed working with children.
Through experience, I have discovered that a great student is one that is respectful. I appreciate when a student is polite and I am very happy to have great listeners in my class. I know that as long as sixth grade students follow the rules and stay organized, they will be successful. I would be disappointed if a student talks when someone else is talking or if a student is mean to others. Last year I did not see any problems and do not expect to see any this year with the students on Team 6B.
To ease some stress, listed are the materials that will be needed in my class: a notebook and folder OR 3-ring binder with extra loose leaf, at least 2 sharpened pencils, an eraser, a pen (color does not matter), and a free reading book. Your child is more than welcome to also have crayons, markers, glue, scissors, notebook, etc… - these will be helpful when projects and assignments are worked on in class.
